More than 100 jobs are to be created after Norwegian, the low-cost airline, set out plans to expand its operations in Scotland.

The carrier is using Edinburgh airport as part of a plan to offer more transatlantic flights from the UK. It has established routes into several cities on the east coast of the United States from London Gatwick, where it employs 700 people.

Norwegian intends to base two or three aircraft at Edinburgh and to recruit 100 cabin crew and about 30 pilots as part of the expansion. The airline has been operating at Edinburgh since 2009 with routes to places such as Copenhagen, Oslo, Stockholm, Barcelona, Tenerife and Malaga.

Thomas Ramdahl, Norwegian’s commercial chief, said Edinburgh was a key part of the airline’s expansion plans in the UK.

Meanwhile, the airport has announced plans to expand its shops this year, leading to about 100 extra jobs.
